Here we will discuss, briefly, some of the subjects traditionally dealt with through hypnosis.

The most common things people see a hypnotherapist for help with are: stress relief; smoking cessation; weight loss; fears and phobias; pain control; sleeplessness and performance enhancement.

For many years hypnosis has been one of the most effective means for dealing with these issues. And, what many people don’t know is that the Soviet Olympic teams, in the days when they dominated certain events, considered hypnosis (performance enhancement visualizations, specifically) to be their “secret weapon.”

How does hypnosis work for these things? Essentially, while in a hypnotic state, we are bypassing the critical mind in order to speak directly to the subconscious. The purpose of this is to give the subconscious the same instructions that are already being held in the conscious (or critical) mind. Basically, we are creating a balance. Most of the issues we seek this type of help for are habit related issues. Habits are housed in the subconscious, so going directly there is a very expeditious way of creating behavioral change.

As I mentioned earlier (see How It Works), hypnosis works by shifting perceptions. Since your perceptions also reside in the subconscious mind, suggestions are made to that part of your mind, designed to change perception, in order to facilitate change quickly.

However, for these suggestions to take root long-term, three things must be present: 1. The suggestion must be True for that person; 2. The suggestion must be stated in a positive manner; and 3. The suggestion must be emotional, in some positive way, for that person. Therefore, if you really do not want to do a certain thing, hypnosis can not make you do so—at least not for any durable period of time.

So, to quit smoking, for example, we need to uncover the real reasons you want to quit, and  then locate that emotional trigger to help you achieve that goal. No, you will probably not turn into a blob of emotional jelly in my office. But, our feelings (also a subconscious resident) are how we effect long-term change in our lives.

It’s really not all that difficult. The complexity is finding the right buttons to push, and then knowing how to push them. But those buttons will always be in accordance with your own moral and ethical values. Just start with the idea of wanting it to happen, and see how easily it will happen.
