HYPNOTHERAPY SERVICES: HYPNOSIS WITH JEFF

This page gives some explanations of things specific to the hypnosis experience.

How It Feels

During your session, you are in complete control. You have the power, believe it or not. For example; did you know that you can emerge yourself (come out of hypnosis) at any time you choose? Well, you can. All you have to do is open your eyes and tell yourself that you are wide awake, and guess what? You will be out of hypnosis. However, I would ask you not to do that, because if you choose to emerge yourself, I will still get paid for the session but you will not accomplish your goal. Guess who loses if you do that? The point is for you to win.

Many people ask the question, “What if I get stuck in hypnosis?” The answer to that is, “It is not possible to get stuck in hypnosis.” If you were in the deepest of all hypnotic trances and I left the room, do you know what would happen? One of two things would occur; in anywhere from a few moments to a few minutes either your mind would get curious about the silence and you would simply emerge on your own; or you would fall asleep and then awaken after a short time.

However, hypnosis is not sleep, in the conventional sense. Science has demonstrated through the study of brain waves that while awake we emit one frequency, while asleep a different frequency, but while in hypnosis the pattern is different yet again. So, the brain wave state of hypnosis and sleep are different—they are different states. While it is true that if there is no activity in your session for an extended period you may fall asleep, if that were to happen you would be changing states—from hypnosis to sleep. In fact, it is impossible to fall asleep while in hypnosis. But, during your session if you should feel like you are going to fall asleep—don’t fight it. Just go with the feeling. You will not fall asleep, and I promise you will have a wonderful time!

So, what does hypnosis feel like, then? The best way I can think of to describe the sensation is that it is much like that place we often go while falling asleep—that state where you are not quite awake, but also not quite asleep. I call it taking a mini-mental vacation; Take a trip without leaving the farm; just allow yourself to zone out. It is a wonderfully relaxing feeling—a massage for the mind, which leaves you feeling refreshed, energized, rejuvenated and like you just had a marvelous power-nap.

Most of us have been trained to believe that in life the harder we try and the more we do the better we do. Hypnosis is exactly the opposite. The less you do, the better you will do. In fact, my instructions to clients is to “do more of nothing than you have ever done in your life.” Just let me do all of the work, and please don’t try to help me!

In fact, you don’t even have to pay attention to me! Ignore me, if you like! (I’m used to it, after all, I am married.) You see, your very powerful subconscious mind will hear everything—whether you hear me consciously or not. You have probably either experienced this, or at least witnessed it at some time in your life: You who are parents probably recall when you (or your significant other) was a new mother. She could fall asleep and sleep through others walking around in the house, sleep through a barking dog, but the second that baby whimpered, she sat straight up! How did that happen? Her subconscious heard everything and when it recognized something as being important, it awakened her. The same principle applies here: your subconscious will hear everything, whether you pay attention to me or not, and the changes you desire can be accomplished without conscious awareness of them.

During hypnosis it is perfectly acceptable to move. Think about this: if moving during hypnosis would cause a person to emerge, then every stage hypnotist in the business would be out of business. After all, who would pay money to watch a bunch of people sleeping on a stage? So, if you need to adjust your posture, go right ahead. If you need to clear your throat—by all means please do so. It won’t hurt a thing.

We have all seen television commercials for prescription drugs. Those commercials always warn us about the side effects of their product. Many of the side effects sound more serious than the problem they are designed to correct. Well, now I’m going to describe to you the possible side effects of hypnosis. I think you’ll agree that these are all pretty benign—nothing at all serious. In fact, none of these ‘side-effects’ will follow you at all—they are only present during your session; if you experience them at all. I would rather you be aware of them—just in case you experience any of them—so you are aware that these are normal phenomena.

             1. Fluttering of the eyelids, or I have also seen a slight quivering of the lips.

             2. During a deeply relaxed state, such as hypnosis, parts of our body may relax that we are not accustomed to relaxing. One of those is the tear ducts. What you would experience in that case would be either a moistening or tearing of the eyes.

             3. Sometimes the salivary glands work over-time, causing a more frequent need to swallow. If you should experience this, please, by all means, go ahead and swallow. It won’t hurt a thing!

             4. During deeply relaxed states our bodies will often experience improved or increased circulation. This can cause a temporary condition known as dilation of surface blood vessels. If this were to occur, what you would notice would be either a warming or a tingling of the face, and/or hands, and/or feet.

             5. You know that little jerky thing that sometimes happens while falling asleep? You may experience that.

             6. And lastly, if you snore during normal sleep, you may snore during hypnosis.

One other thing I would like you to understand: What the mind perceives to be real, is very real to that person, whether there is any logical or rational basis to it, or not. For example; did you know there are people in this world who are deathly afraid of butterflies? On the face of it, even the people who experience that fear find it completely ridiculous! There is no rational reason at all that a human should fear a butterfly. It would make sense if you were a leaf, but a human really has nothing to fear. Even knowing that the fear is illogical doesn’t change their perception when they are actually faced with a dreaded butterfly! Hypnosis works by shifting perceptions. So, anything you can imagine to be real and true for you can be real and true for you, even if there is no rational or logical basis to it.

Therefore, the best way for you to accomplish your goal is to simply loan me your imagination for a little while. Just allow yourself to imagine that anything I say to you is very real and true to you and you can accomplish anything you ever dreamed of or desired. It really is that easy.
